How We Teach Reading

How We Teach Phonics

In January 2016, we launched Read Write Inc. This is a lively and fun synthetics phonics programme that develops basic phonics skills and teaches children to read and write quickly. The programme is taught in Reception and KS1 and we are confident that it will have a very positive impact on the children's phonics and spelling skills.

Read Write Inc.  helps  children to learn the 44 common sounds in the English language and teaches them how to blend sounds for reading. The children  are grouped according to their reading level and will be assessed every 6-8 weeks. After each assessment, new groups will be created to ensure that children are taught according to their needs. In addition to developing handwriting and spelling skills, the children also read lively and engaging story books and non-fiction books containing words they can decode using their phonic knowledge. This  ensures early success in reading and the children's confidence will surely  grow as a result.

The children also develop comprehension and speaking and listening skills as partner work is a key element during the sessions.

All staff who deliver the programme will be fully trained. If you would like any further information please contact Mrs G Ross - our Read Write Inc. leader.
