  • Prevent

At Fatfield Academy, we are committed to keeping all of our children safe. As part of this commitment, we work to protect children from all forms of harm, including the risk of radicalisation and extremism.

    What is Prevent?

The Prevent Duty is part of the UK Government's wider counter-terrorism strategy. It aims to safeguard children and young people by preventing them from being drawn into terrorism or extremist ideologies.

Schools have a legal duty to identify children who may be vulnerable to radicalisation and to provide appropriate support where concerns arise.

    How do we promote Prevent?

At Fatfield Academy, Prevent is embedded within our wider safeguarding and personal development curriculum. We promote:

    • Respect for others and their views.
    • Tolerance of different faiths, cultures and beliefs.
    • Democracy, the rule of law and individual liberty through British Values.
    • Critical thinking and the ability to question information.
    • Safe and responsible use of the internet.
    • Positive relationships and a strong sense of belonging.
    • An inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected.

Through our curriculum, assemblies, PSHE, RSHE, RE and online safety education, children learn about diversity, equality and the importance of treating others with kindness and respect.

    Recognising Concerns

Like all safeguarding issues, concerns about radicalisation are taken seriously. Staff receive regular safeguarding training, including Prevent training, to help them recognise signs that a child may be vulnerable and to know how to respond appropriately.

Any concerns are dealt with in accordance with our safeguarding procedures and may involve working with other agencies to ensure children receive the right support.

    Working in Partnership

We recognise that protecting children is a shared responsibility. We work closely with parents, carers and external agencies to promote children's safety and wellbeing.

If you have any concerns about a child or would like further information about the Prevent Duty, please contact one of our Designated Safeguarding Leads.

Together, we can help children become confident, respectful and resilient members of our community.
